Delicata squash is easy to cook, and you can enjoy its unique flavor and texture. So, if you are wondering how to cook delicata squash on the stove? Let me tell you, and it’s super easy and effortless. Read ahead and find out!

What is Delicata Squash?

Delicata squash, also known as sweet potato squash or peanut squash, is a type of winter squash that is typically oblong or cylindrical with cream-colored skin marked by green or orange stripes. The flesh of the delicata squash is yellowish-orange, and it has a sweet, nutty flavor similar to sweet potatoes. Delicata squash is a good source of fiber, vitamins A and C, potassium, and magnesium. It is also low in calories and carbohydrates, making it a nutritious and healthy addition to any meal.

Delicata squash has a thinner skin than other winter squash varieties, making it easier to prepare and cook. The skin is also edible, so it does not need to be peeled before eating. This makes it a popular choice for roasting, baking, and grilling.

Can You Cook Delicata Squash on Stove?

Yes, you can cook delicata squash on the stove. There are several ways to cook delicata squash, but cooking it on a stovetop is quick, convenient, and easy. All you need is a skillet or pan, and that’s all. Because of its delicate texture, you can cook it in less time and effortlessly.

Is Delicata Squash Sweet or Savory?

Delicata squash is naturally slightly sweet in flavor, which makes it a perfect candidate for sweet dishes. However, because it is essentially a vegetable, you can use its sweet flavor and pair it with savory flavors to create a savory dish. Here are a few ways you can use delicata squash to make a sweet or savory dish:

  • Drizzle honey on top, along with a pinch of nutmeg powder and cinnamon powder. It is a perfect sweet side dish to serve with your main course. Moreover, you can also replace honey with maple syrup or light brown sugar. As you cook the squash, the caramelization will add a deep flavor to this dish.
  • The slightly sweet flavor of delicata squash pairs very well with savory flavors like paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Moreover, you can also sprinkle fresh herbs or cheese for a unique flavor blend.

Tips to Remember

  • Make sure you cut the delicata squash into even slices. It is crucial for even cooking.
  • You can check the doneness of the squash by piercing a fork in it.
  • Don’t forget to flip the squash slices halfway into the cook.
  • You can use any vegetable oil instead of olive oil. If you want to use melted butter, feel free to use it.
  • You can season the squash with spices other than black pepper and salt.
  • You can serve the slices as they are or mash them using a fork to create a delicious puree.

How to store Delicata Squash?

Delicata squash stores very well, making it a good meal prep choice. Once the cooked squash cools down, place it in an air-tight container and refrigerate it for up to five days. Because of its delicate texture, I don’t recommend freezing it, as thawing it will change its texture. You can, however, freeze uncooked delicata squash for up to 6 months. Slice it and flash freeze it for 3 to 4 hours. Then store in a freezer-safe container.
