How to Make Italian Sausage with Peppers and Onions in the Oven

Italian sausages are delicious and come in a wide range of flavor options. Although they are mainly made using pork meat, you can also find them in chicken or turkey meat. Sausages are versatile and go well with many things. However, you can use them to make a quick, easy, and delicious meal. All you have to do is pair them up with bell peppers and onions and cook them in the oven.

Sausages with peppers and onions are a delicious dish that is an excellent choice for both lunch and dinner, and you can use the leftovers for breakfast as well. Although most people make this dish over a stovetop in a skillet, the easiest way to cook Italian sausages with peppers and onions is by using an oven. It is quick, convenient, and effortless.

Substitutes and variation ideas

Here are just a few ideas if you want to vary or substitute any of the ingredients in our sausage, onions, and peppers recipe.

  • Sausages: Although we have used mild Italian sausages for this recipe, you can replace these with sweet Italian sausages or hot Italian sausages. Sweet Italian sausages have a slightly sweet flavor, whereas hot Italian sausages are spicy. You can use chicken or turkey sausages as well. Whatever you love will work. Also, I prefer slicing the sausages before cooking the dish in the oven, but you can cook them whole.
  • Vegetables: You can use red, green, or yellow bell peppers or all three for this recipe. Plus, add your favorite seasonal vegetables for even more flavor. Potatoes are also delicious in this dish.
  • Red Wine Vinegar: Replace red wine with red wine vinegar. It will add a tangy flavor to the dish.
  • Pasta sauce/ crushed tomatoes: If you want to add a bit of sauce or gravy to this dish, add pasta sauce or canned crushed tomatoes for a rich, tomatoey flavor.

What to serve with Italian sausage with peppers and onions

Although the dish tastes just perfect on its own, here is what you can serve with Italian sausages with pepper and onions:

  • Rice/quinoa: Whether white rice, brown rice, or quinoa, this sausage dish goes very well with the grains. In fact, it is a complete package.
  • pasta: You can enjoy sausages with pepper and onion with any of your pasta dishes. Add boiled pasta to this dish and enjoy a delicious pasta dish with sausages, peppers, and onions. It is a great way to use leftovers.
  • Cauliflower rice: Cauliflower rice, like the name says, is made with cauliflower. It is a delicious twist on grains and works well if you want to add more vegetables to your diet.
  • Mashed potatoes: You can never go wrong with mashed potatoes. They go well with everything, literally! And sausages with onion and peppers are no different. Serve this dish with fluffy and creamy mashed potatoes, and enjoy!
  • Eggs: The reason why I love sausages with pepper and onion is that you can use the leftovers for breakfast as well. All you have to do is improvise a little. For instance, you can heat the leftovers and add an egg to make a sausage, pepper, and onion scramble. Or you can serve these with fried eggs or poached eggs as well.
  • Bread: The leftovers go well in a sandwich or a sub. Plus, you can serve them with your favorite piece of bread and enjoy!
